Safe Breakfast Foods for Dogs

It can be safe to share certain breakfast foods with your dog. We will explain different ways to do so and how to avoid health problems. Breakfast treats or special snacks can provide health benefits to your pets, but they should receive the majority of their nutrients from a well-balanced diet.

The most effective and safe diets are commercial well-balanced diets from reputable companies or home-cooked diets formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. Sharing breakfast should not be used as the sole or main source of nutrients for your pet, but it can be a fun treat or special snack. Be mindful of your pet’s size and gastrointestinal health before choosing the type and amount of food you will share. Some pets can eat a variety of snacks and stay healthy, but others can become sick with even the slightest change in their diet.

Do’s and Don'ts of Sharing Your Breakfast with Your Dog:

DON’T:

  • Feed human foods that contain large amounts of sugars or toxic artificial sweeteners like xylitol.

  • Share toxic fruits such as grapes or raisins.

  • Share chocolate and macadamia nuts because they are toxic.

  • Share toxic ingredients like nutmeg, onions, and garlic.

  • Share large amounts of nuts that contain too much fat, like almonds or peanuts.

  • Feed too much dairy such as milk, butter, and cream cheese, since lactose is hard for dogs to digest and can cause an upset stomach.

  • Share coffee or tea, as caffeine is toxic and can have harmful effects on your dog’s heart.

DO SHARE:

  • Oatmeal cooked in water.

  • Safe fruits such as bananas, apples, watermelon, and cantaloupe.

  • Safe berries such as strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries.

  • Small amounts of pancakes.

  • Bread or toast.

  • Small amounts of boiled or scrambled eggs.

  • Small amounts of Greek yogurt, as it has less lactose compared to other dairy foods.
